This book presents over 3,400 waypoints (latitude and longitude coordinates) in the Lake Michigan area.
Almost 100 handy reference maps show readers where the marine facility waypoints (marinas, fuel docks, waterfront restaurants, municipal launching ramps, drawbridges, safety force docks, etc.) are located in relationship to each other.
Over 1,400 telephone numbers (twice verified by the author) make it easy for the reader to call the marine facility operators for more information.
Over 1,250 Cruising Bullets denote the waypoints associated with non-stop cruising.
It's easy to skip back and forth across many bodies of water or to work in reverse order of the book.
 
The book is divided into the following five sections:
  • Introduction: The tab page displays a map of Lake Michigan bearing all ports and the page numbers where their waypoints begin. The text helps the boater to maximize his/her use of the book. It makes many complex subjects easy to understand.
    • Bibliography & Sources of Information: Boaters will find it easy to obtain every publication used in the research and development process of this book. It gives plenty of names and telephone numbers --- including street, e-mail and World Wide Web site addresses.
    • Waypoint Sheet - Overview:  Use this one page "quick reference" guide to understand the layout of the 3,400 waypoint lines.
    • Waypoint Sheet - Additional Explanations: This two page reference guide builds upon the 13 big numbered items of the "Overview."
    • Waypoint Sheet - Abbreviations & Terminology:  This displays every abreviation in the book and all of the frequently used terms.
    • Index of Communities, Waterways & Islands:  Need to find a town, island, lake, bay, river, etc.? This will take you to either a reference map or a waypoint page.
  • East Section of Lake Michigan: The tab page displays a map of Lake Michigan with four outlines of the regional maps that cover the East Section from the Straits of Mackinac to Michigan City, Indiana. The regional maps link to 31 harbor maps. All maps link to the 31 pages of waypoint lines. The book details every navigable lake and river that flows into Lake Michigan.
  • West Section of Lake Michigan: The tab page displays a map of Lake Michigan with three outlines of the regional maps that cover the West Section from Burns International Habor in Indiana to the Porte des Morts Passage at the north end of Wisconsin's Door Peninsula. The regional maps link to 22 harbor maps. The book details every navigable river that flows into Lake Michigan.
  • North Section of Lake Michigan: The tab page displays a map of Lake Michigan with four outlines of the regional maps that cover the North Section. The regional maps link to 14 supporting maps. The first regional map regional maps cover the following areas:
    • Lower Green Bay: Starts at the Ports des Morts Passage and hugs the east shore into the City of Green Bay (ascending 19 miles of the Lower Fox River to the Rapide Croche Lock). Then it doubles back to the west shore of Green Bay and heads north into the southwestern waters of Upper Green Bay..
    • Upper Green Bay: The book helps the boater to explore the islands adjoining Lake Michigan. It then doubles back to the southwestern waters of Upper Green Bay. It then takes the boater north along the Michigan shoreline into Little Bay de Noc, Big Bay de Noc and south along  the west shore of the Garden Peninsula.
    • North Shore of Lake Michigan:  The course turns north into Manistique, Michigan and then heads east to the Straits of Mackinac Bridge --- linking back to the East Section of the book.
    • Lake Winnebago Area:  This section section starts on the Lower Fox River at the Rapide Croche Lock. and continues south into and around Lake Winnebago. It ascends the Upper Fox River through Oshkosh, Wisconsin and another 28 miles into Berlin. It then ascends the Lower Wolf River for 55 miles into New London.
  • Illinois Waterway (from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi River): Starts at  Chicago's Main Harbor Lock. It explores the Chicago River and its branches, including the North Shore Channel and the Chicago Sanitary & Ship Canal above its junction with the Calumet-Sag Channel. It later starts again in Lake Michigan at Calumet Harbor and takes a straight cruise to Grafton, Illinois on the Mississippi River.
